Sara is a seven-year-old girl from South Sudan, a country that has been engulfed by a civil war since 2013. She lost her parents in the conflict, and now lives with her grandmother in a remote village, where food is scarce and insecurity is high. She walks for two hours every day to collect water from a dirty pond, which exposes her to waterborne diseases.

Sara suffers from chronic hunger, a condition that occurs when a person does not have enough food or the right kind of food over a long period of time. Chronic hunger can cause physical and mental impairment, stunting, wasting, anemia and increased mortality. Chronic hunger can also affect a person's ability to work, learn and cope with stress.

Sara receives a daily meal of sorghum porridge from WFP at school, which helps her to survive and learn. WFP provides school meals to over 300,000 children in South Sudan every day, as part of its emergency operation. School meals not only improve the nutrition and health of children, but also encourage them to attend school regularly and complete their education.

Sara enjoys studying and playing with her classmates at school, which helps her to forget her troubles and have fun. She loves math and science, and wants to be a doctor when she grows up. She says that she wants to help people who are sick and injured like her parents.

Sara's story is one of determination and aspiration despite hardship and suffering. It shows how WFP's school meals can help alleviate the hunger and malnutrition of children who live in conflict-affected areas. It also shows how WFP's work is not only about saving lives, but also about creating futures.
